Assumption Day

Assumption Day

On the Assumption Day (Žolinės), worshippers, families and individual travellers are visiting various places where miracles or manifestations are said to have taken place.

Since the ancient times, there have been places in Lithuania that Christian worshippers used to visit to pray for grace, health or to seek repentance. Places where Saint Virgin Mary manifested are often considered holy.

There are a lot of people who believe that the prayer gets stronger in holy places. In gratitude for prayers heard, in places of manifestations people are erecting impressive sculptures, oak crosses, planting flowers or making donations for the upkeep of the place.

One of the  most popular Saint place in Lithuania is Siluva, where Virgin Mary appeared 400years ago in one of Europe’s first Marian apparitions, and probably the only in which she spoke to a non-Catholic Christian. The feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary has been celebrated here for nearly 500 years, each time drawing many thousands of pilgrims from all of Lithuania and beyond. Pious visitors throng to the Chapel of the Apparition of Our Lady of Šiluva, which stands in the exact place where 400 years ago Mary appeared. Nearby, in the shrine’s Basilica, they pray before a painting of Mary and Jesus that has been renowned for special graces since the early 17th century. On September 7, 1993, Pope John Paul II prayed at Šiluva and entrusted Lithuania to the protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
