Birštonas ( pronunciation (help·info)) is a balneological resort and a spa town in Lithuania situated 30 km (19 mi) south of Kaunas on the right bank of the Nemunas River.

The status of a resort was awarded to Birštonas in 1846, while already during the 19th-20th centuries the convalescent houses of this town having the roots of a "royal resort" were widely applying local spa and curative mud procedures. At the time famous resort was visited by patients not only from lithuania, but also from the largest cities of Russia and Poland. The distance from Vilnius to Birštonas is only alomost 100km, while from Kaunas - half less. The resort is loved by local and foreign sportsmen as place suitable for training camps, where the preparation for competitions is combined with hydrotherapy, curative mud and other rehabilitation procedures.

The landscape of the resort is very scenery: houses nestled among the trees, elegant villas from the end of the 19th - the beginning of the 20th centuries, skyscraping churches, spa pump-room, the Monument for Vytautas the Great, the Hill of Songs, little artificial lakes. The resort frequently organises various concerts, poetry evenings and sports events (especially known competition "The Strongest Man of Nemunas" and walkers' marathon race). Birštonas is popular venue for conferences and seminars, where the fatigue caused by work is quickly relieved by relaxation procedures or free time spent in the ambience of harmonious and brisk nature. The town has several small, but very cosy hotels and guest houses as well as catering institutions.

Birštonas is also becoming a winter resort. here are two skiing lanes, which in wintertime are always full of snow produced by a "Snow cannon", for children - a sledging hill. The imposing nature panoramas emerge from the steep banks of the Nemunas River, the hill-forts of Birštonas. You can swim along the bends of Nemunas in canoes rented in the Sports Centre. Near the islands of Nemunas there is a Bird Watching Site. However, the most fascinating view of Nemunas loops can be enjoyed in an air ballon or plane from the Pociūnai Airport.
